Special Assessment District - (7/11/25 email - Update: Special Assessment District (SAD) Petitions

We are pleased to let you know that we have secured the required 51% to submit the petition to the township for the establishment and approval of the SAD for water monitoring and treatment of invasive aquatic plant species. The petitions have been handed off to the township for review and we expect full support and approval.

Thank you to all who submitted their petitions - this is an important issue for ALL property owners. If you have not yet submitted your petition we would ask that you do so ASAP. It is still important that we hear from as many lake front property owners as possible.

As always, the BSLA is committed to protecting and preserving the health of Big Star Lake. We will keep you posted as things develop.

Special Assessment District - (2/19/25 email – Important Updates from the BSLA Board)

The SAD (Special Assessment District) Big Star Lake – Aquatic Weed Treatment is a tax assessment that funds Aquatic Weed Treatment for Big Star Lake through Lake Township. A typical SAD runs for approximately 5 years. Our SAD for Aquatic Weed Treatment has expired with funds running out after this summer. The SAD plays an essential role in maintaining the health of the lake. The BSLA board has started the process of renewing this vital piece of funding to continue treating the lake for invasive species. Once plans have been filed with the Township, the Township adopts a resolution tentatively declaring its intent to make the public improvements.

The process and steps to gain approval for a SAD are lengthy and require multiple hearings and notices through local newspaper publications, ultimately requiring the support of property owners of Big Star Lake. The petitions for property owners’ support will go out to all lake front property owners to approve.  Specific date yet to be determined. We need over 50% of property owners to sign the petition to ensure funding continues. We will keep you posted along the way as progress is made with the Township.

Your BSLA is working hard to continue to maintain and improve the water quality of Big Star Lake. We encourage everyone to approve this assessment. Thank you.
